Farmers urged to protect crops during rains, flood and pest risks

FAISALABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Jul, 2026) Agricultural experts have advised farmers to adopt timely preventive measures to safeguard crops during the monsoon season, warning that prolonged water-logging, rapid weed growth and increased pest activity could significantly reduce yields if left unmanaged.

According to a spokesman of Agriculture (Extension) Department, although monsoon rains help lower temperatures and replenish water resources, yet it can also create serious challenges for standing crops.

He said that excessive rainfall often results in water stagnation, encourages the rapid spread of weeds and provides favorable conditions for insect infestations, all of which can adversely affect crop productivity.

He said that sugarcane, paddy and fodder crops can tolerate excess water comparatively better during the monsoon. Therefore, the farmers should divert surplus rainwater from sensitive fields to these crops wherever possible.

He said that cotton and vegetable crops are highly vulnerable to prolonged waterlogging and require immediate drainage of excess rainwater.

If sugarcane or paddy fields are located near cotton or vegetable fields, the surplus water should be diverted there. Where no such option exists, the farmers should dig drainage channels to remove standing water without delay, he added.

He warned that if rainwater remains in cotton fields for more than 48 hours, cotton plants may begin to die, leading to a substantial decline in production.

Where necessary, the farmers should consult local Agriculture Extension officials before applying growth regulators to cotton after heavy rains to support healthy crop development, he added.

He also urged the growers to closely monitor weather forecasts broadcast on radio and television and plan irrigation and other farm operations in accordance with prevailing weather conditions.

He highlighted that monsoon conditions also accelerate weed growth, with weeds competing with crops for nutrients, moisture and sunlight while providing shelter to harmful insects.

Increase in humidity and muggy weather further create favorable conditions for sap-sucking pests, increasing the likelihood of crop damage, he added.

He advised the farmers to inspect their fields regularly during the monsoon and immediately seek guidance from local Agriculture Extension or Pest Warning staff if signs of pests or diseases appear.

He emphasized that timely technical advice and adoption of recommended preventive measures would not only protect crops from avoidable losses but also help ensure high yields and improve farmers' incomes.

Prudent crop management along with timely action during monsoon season is the key to protect agricultural production and secure a successful harvest, he added.
