LARKANA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st May, 2026) Expert doctors said that fistula disease is a dangerous affecting women during childbirth. In Pakistan, 3,000 to 5,000 new cases of fistula occur every year so this alarming suitation.
Additionally, thousands women's are suffering from this disease who have no knowledge about this debilitating condition or its treatment. 90% of women with fistula deliver stillborn babies.
These views were expressed during an awareness seminar held at Chandka Medical College Larkana on the occasion of the International Day to End Fistula, under the theme "Women's Health: A Basic Right and the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula."
During the seminar, experts shared their views and important information about fistula disease. On this occasion, Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Siddiqui and Dr. Fozia Chandio stated that according to reports from global health organizations, the rate of complications and deaths during childbirth in Pakistan remains concerning, especially in rural areas where there is a severe lack of medical facilities.
In Pakistan, only 66% of births take place in health centers, and only 69% of women receive trained medical assistance during childbirth. They further said that in such circumstances, women in backward areas face serious health risks.Despite these alarming statistics, the encouraging thing is that fistula is not only treatable but also preventable.
They stated that a woman's health is her fundamental right, and providing safe childbirth facilities is a shared responsibility of the state and society.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>They said that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Fistula Foundation observe May 23rd every year as the International Day to End Fistula. The purpose of this day is to promote quality care processes to protect expectant mothers from death and disease. If women receive timely care during childbirth, they can be protected from fistula disease.By providing trained staff and midwives, improving medical facilities in backward areas, and raising awareness among women, it is possible to control debilitating diseases like fistula.
Experts Doctors told that global health organizations working for women's health have set the year 2030 as the target for ending fistula. In Pakistan, this will be possible only when the government improves its policies by making maternal and child health a national priority, activating every Basic Health Unit and Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, training skilled midwives and staff, increasing their salaries, providing service structures, and offering free basic and emergency childbirth care to pregnant women. Only then can fistula be completely eliminated.
The seminar was attended by Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Siddiqui, Manager of the National Fistula Program; Professor Dr. Shahid Hussain, Principal of Chandka College; Dr. Fozia Chandio, Vice Principal and Focal Person for the Fistula Program; along with other expert doctors, medical staff, female students, and a large number of women.
