LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Mar, 2026) Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) Coordinator Saif-ur-Rehman said on Monday that ever-growing population coupled with hovering climate changes has posed severe and multifaceted threats to Pakistan’s economy.
Addressing a seminar on “Impact of Climate Change and Growing Population on Pak Economy” here, he added that rapid population growth continues to exert immense pressure on the country’s limited resources, aggravating unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity. This unchecked rise in population dilutes the benefits of economic progress, strains social services, and hinders efforts toward human development.
At the same time, he said, the growing impact of climate change—manifested through floods, droughts, heatwaves, and declining agricultural productivity—further weakens the economic fabric and disrupts livelihoods, particularly in rural areas,he added.
To ensure sustainable economic growth, immediate and coordinated measures are imperative. The government must adopt effective population management strategies through education, awareness campaigns, and family planning programs. Simultaneously, climate-resilient policies should be prioritized to mitigate environmental degradation and promote the use of renewable energy, efficient water management, and green technologies. He said equally important is the need to uplift the downtrodden strata of society by ensuring equitable distribution of resources, expanding social safety nets, and fostering inclusive economic opportunities.
Only by curtailing population growth and addressing the climate crisis can Pakistan secure a stable, resilient, and sustainable economic future for its people and ensure prosperity for generations to come.
