Genocide Watch in its February 2026 report focuses on condition of Muslims in India

NEW DEHLI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News- March 28th, 2026) An international watchdog organization, Genocide Watch, has released a report expressing concerns over the situation of minorities, including Muslims, in India, stating that the country has crossed seven out of the ten stages outlined in its genocide risk framework.

Genocide Watch, which monitors and works to prevent genocide globally, uses a ten-stage model to identify early warning signs of mass violence. Its February 2026 report focuses on the condition of Muslims in India and points to what it describes as an increase in hate speech and anti-minority sentiment since Narendra Modi became prime minister.

The report claims that discriminatory practices, inflammatory rhetoric, and restrictions on minority rights have become more visible in parts of Indian society. It also highlights issues such as alleged underrepresentation of Muslims in public institutions, along with reports of hate-related incidents and legal and administrative actions affecting minority communities.

According to the report, although Muslims constitute around 14.2% of India’s population, their representation in civil services is estimated at about 3% and in police services at around 4%, limiting their participation in governance and institutional decision-making.

The report further references developments in Assam, where millions of people reportedly face uncertainty regarding their citizenship status. It notes the establishment of detention facilities in the region and suggests that certain communities, particularly Bengali Muslims, are among those most affected.

Genocide Watch also raises concerns about the circulation of online content allegedly promoting hostility and violence following major incidents, as well as the role of certain ideological groups in encouraging aggressive narratives.

Additionally, the report claims that Muslims account for a significant proportion of the prison population and calls attention to incidents where members of minority communities have been impacted during communal clashes.

The organization has urged authorities to take steps to curb hate speech, discourage extremist activities, and ensure the protection of minority rights in line with international standards.
