Govt reaffirms commitment to reviving hockey, supporting young talent

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Apr, 2026) Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sports in the country, with a special focus on reviving hockey and developing young talent.

Addressing an under-18 hockey championship, the minister praised the skills and passion displayed by the young players, describing their performance as “amazing.”

He encouraged the participants to remain dedicated, stating that both victory and defeat are part of the game.

“Winning and losing are natural aspects of sports, but the passion, hard work, and talent you have shown today are what truly matter. The government will make every effort to provide you with a strong platform and opportunities to excel,” he said.

Highlighting the past glory of Pakistan hockey, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary recalled a time when various departments, including Pakistan Customs and Pakistan International Airlines, actively sponsored teams and helped foster a competitive sports culture. He observed that such institutional support played a key role in producing national heroes.

The minister said the government is now considering reviving the departmental sports system to strengthen hockey and other games across the country.

Congratulating Pakistan Customs on their 3-0 victory, he also lauded Punjab and other participating teams for their commendable performances in the tournament.

He further noted that sports contribute not only to physical fitness but also foster qualities such as teamwork, endurance, and leadership.

He appreciated the joint efforts of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination, Pakistan Sports board, and the Pakistan Hockey Federation for the successful conduct of the event.

“These kinds of competitions are laying the foundation for a bright future of hockey,” he said, adding that under the leadership of Rana Sanaullah, reforms and development initiatives in the sports sector are underway.

The minister further said that, by the grace of Almighty Allah, Pakistan is attaining a unique stature, respect, and recognition across the globe, and that this trajectory is expected to continue under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

“We are committed to dedicating our full efforts to the promotion of sports. Our goal is to work tirelessly to restore Pakistan to its former glory on the world stage,” he added.

At the conclusion of the match, the minister distributed shields and prizes among players who demonstrated remarkable performances during the event.
