Islamabad becomes the world’s diplomatic capital today as the US Iran ceasefire enters a critical phase. While a partial Strait of Hormuz reopening offers global markets slight relief, the Trump Iran ceasefire remains fragile. High-stakes Islamabad talks now determine if this pause leads to a permanent Trump Iran deal.
US-Iran Talks, Islamabad: A City Under Lockdown
The Red Zone sealed Islamabad protocol is in full effect. Authorities declared a holiday in the twin cities to secure the US delegation in Islamabad. Army and Rangers personnel line the streets for the Islamabad talks. High-level officials, including JD Vance, have arrived for these Iran-US negotiations Islamabad.
The agenda follows the Iran 10-point proposal. This document serves as the foundation for the Trump-Iran ceasefire. Washington and Tehran are attempting to turn a temporary halt into a lasting Trump-Iran deal. However, local Islamabad security remains at its highest level in years to protect the foreign envoys.
Strait of Hormuz Reopening: The 15-Ship Limit
Navigation has partially resumed in the Hormuz Strait. However, the Strait of Hormuz ceasefire terms are strict. Currently, Iran allows 15 ships per day to pass. Each vessel must obtain Hormuz ships approval from the IRGC before entry. The 15-ship Hormuz quota creates a significant maritime bottleneck.
Under IRGC supervision, the Strait of Hormuz toll on trade emphasizes that things are not back to normal. Iran demands its frozen assets back within two weeks. They also seek a UN Security Council resolution to formally end the war. Without these, the Strait of Hormuz reopening could reverse instantly.
The Lebanon Conflict: A Deal Breaker?
The most significant threat to peace is the lack of an Iran Lebanon ceasefire. While the US Iran ceasefire holds in the Gulf, Israel strikes in Lebanon continue. Iran warns it will close the Strait of Hormuz again if these attacks do not stop.
The US Iran talks in Islamabad face a deadlock over this issue. The U.S. and Israel refuse to include Lebanon in the current truce. Meanwhile, Iran insists that Lebanon is central to any Trump Iran deal. Tehran also urges the U.S. to stop increasing its regional military presence. For now, Iran continues to adhere to uranium enrichment limits as part of the Iran 10 point proposal.
