HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 29th Mar, 2026) Citizens related to different walks of life strongly condemned India’s attempts to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), terming the move an act against humanity and a step that could escalate tensions between the two countries. They said water was a basic human necessity and its fair distribution must be ensured, adding that international laws guarantee the protection of such rights.
In a survey conducted by APP, social activist Mujeeb Ahmed said the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was an internationally recognized agreement that ensures equitable distribution of water between the people of Pakistan and India. “If India unilaterally suspends the treaty, it would not only be inhumane but also an attempt to heighten tensions between the two nations, affecting millions across the region,” he added.
He remarked that water was directly linked to human survival, and warned that any such move would undermine the concept of peaceful coexistence in the region.
Zahid Hussain, a trader associated with the auto industry, urged the international community to intervene into the issue and make it clear that no country has the right to block water resources of another country. He said Pakistan must closely monitor the situation and take effective steps to address the issue.
“Pakistan is an agricultural country, and its farming sector heavily depends on water. Millions of livelihoods are linked to agriculture and livestock sectors, and India’s rigid and unjust stance on this issue must be challenged at every available international forum,” he said.
Dr. Asghar Shah, a medical professional and associated with the agriculture sector, called for national unity against “water aggression.” He said Pakistan was already facing water scarcity, and agricultural production in several areas has been affected due to water shortages.
“In such circumstances, any attempt to suspend an important agreement like the Indus Waters Treaty would amount to playing with the economy and the lives of the people,” he said and added that our nation would never compromise on its water rights.
He urged the government to immediately raise the matter at international forums and take concrete measures to prevent any such move by India.
The citizens further stressed that for sustainable peace and development in the region, both countries must adhere to the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) to safeguard the lives of people and focus on economic growth and prosperity.
