MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Apr, 2026) A sharp and unjustified increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices by shopkeepers has triggered serious concern among residents of South Punjab, where a majority of households depend on LPG for daily cooking needs.
Residents from various districts reported that local LPG filling operators are charging excessive rates, alleging that dealers are earning an illegal profit of around Rs190 to Rs200 per kilogram. The self-imposed hike, they said, has placed an additional burden on low- and middle-income families.
Citizens, including Muhammad Arif, Muhammad Riaz, Salman Amjad, and Talal Qureshi, voiced strong protest and urged the Punjab government to take immediate notice. They demanded strict action against those involved in overcharging and called for effective price regulation.
“The situation has made it extremely difficult to manage kitchen expenses,” said a local resident, Asim. “Daily necessities are already expensive, and this added burden is unbearable.”
Residents complained that there is no effective monitoring mechanism in place, alleging that LPG distributors are setting prices arbitrarily without fear of accountability.
In many areas, prices vary significantly, highlighting the lack of regulation.
The rising cost of LPG has directly impacted household budgets, with daily wage earners among the worst affected. Many families have been forced to reduce consumption or switch to unsafe alternatives.
They further alleged that weak enforcement of official price lists and the absence of regular inspections have allowed such practices to continue unchecked, stressing the need for strict action and transparent pricing policies.
Residents appealed to the authorities to ensure implementation of official LPG rates, conduct surprise inspections, and impose penalties on violators.
They warned that if the issue remains unresolved, public protests may intensify in the coming days, urging urgent intervention to protect consumers from exploitation and ensure the affordability of essential fuel across South Punjab.
