LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Jun, 2026) Amiruddin Medical College, Principal Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal emphasized
that mental health holds greater importance than physical health, stating that mental
illness could make a person completely dependent on others, unlike many physical disabilities.
He expressed these views while addressing an awareness walk and skit organized
by the Department of Psychiatry at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) to mark World
Schizophrenia Awareness Day.
Prof. Farooq Afzal said mental health could not be ignored under any circumstances.
He noted that while individuals with physical limitations could often manage their lives
with some support, mental disabilities may leave a person entirely dependent on others.
He stressed that schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders could be effectively
managed through timely diagnosis and proper treatment, enabling patients to lead
dignified and productive lives.
The awareness walk was attended by Head of the Department of Psychiatry Prof. Faiza Athar,
doctors, medical students, health professionals and paramedical staff. Participants
carried placards highlighting the importance of empathy, respect for patients’ dignity
and early medical intervention.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>A specially prepared awareness skit was also presented, depicting the social challenges
faced by schizophrenia patients, the importance of family support and the need for timely
treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Faiza Athar said schizophrenia was a brain disorder
in which patients may hear voices or see things that were not real, significantly affecting
their thinking and decision-making abilities. She said modern medicines and proper
counseling enable patients to live normal and active lives. She advised that individuals
showing symptoms such as prolonged social withdrawal, confusion, irritability or hearing
imaginary voices should seek immediate consultation with a psychiatrist. Regular medication
and consistent follow-up, she added, are essential for successful treatment.
Prof. Farooq Afzal appreciated the efforts of Department of Psychiatry and reaffirmed
LGH’s commitment to strengthening mental health services and ensuring the best possible
care for patients. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing a collective
commitment to promoting mental health awareness and eliminating the stigma associated
with psychiatric disorders.
