MULTAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th May, 2026) With Eid-ul-Azha approaching, cattle markets across South Punjab are witnessing comparatively low buyer turnout as soaring livestock prices and weakened purchasing power appear to be discouraging citizens from making early purchases, traders, buyers and market observers said.
Despite the establishment of temporary cattle markets in Multan and adjoining districts, the traditional rush of buyers has yet to gain momentum, with many traders expressing concerns over slow business activity compared to previous years.
Livestock traders said the rising cost of animal feed, transportation, veterinary care and overall maintenance had significantly increased their expenses, leaving little room to reduce prices.
“Expenses have increased manifold this year. Transportation costs alone have affected prices, while fodder and medicines are also expensive,” said a livestock trader at a local cattle market, adding that sales remained below expectations.
Potential buyers, however, attributed their hesitation to inflationary pressures and shrinking household budgets, saying many middle-income families were finding it difficult to afford sacrificial animals.
“People are carefully managing household expenses due to inflation. Many are considering collective sacrifice or opting for smaller animals this year,” said a resident visiting a cattle market in Multan.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>According to market sources, buyers are largely avoiding early purchases and waiting for the final days before Eid in the hope that prices may decline. Traders, on the other hand, remain optimistic that business activity would improve closer to Eid-ul-Azha, as traditionally observed.
Several market participants noted that unlike previous years, footfall in cattle markets has remained lower during the initial phase, while online animal trading and collective sacrifice arrangements may also be influencing consumer trends.
Economic analysts believe that persistent inflation and reduced disposable income have affected spending patterns even during religious occasions, compelling families to reassess financial priorities.
They observed that while the religious spirit associated with Eid-ul-Azha remains strong, changing economic realities appear to be shaping public purchasing behavior, particularly among low and middle-income groups.
Meanwhile, district authorities said arrangements had been made at cattle markets to facilitate traders and visitors, including security, sanitation and veterinary services, expressing hope that business activity would gradually pick up in the coming days.
