PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Apr, 2026) Cases of malaria are recorded from across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the provincial capital Peshawar, posing a serious threat to public health.

According to official and medical sources on Sunday, more than 90 people have lost their lives due to malaria over the past four months, while the number of reported cases continues to rise steadily.

Health experts warn that public attention remains largely focused on dengue, whereas malaria is equally dangerous and in some cases, even more deadly.

A significant portion of the population lacks awareness about the risks and preventive measures associated with the disease, further worsening the situation.

Meanwhile, World Malaria Day is being observed today in Pakistan and around the world, aiming at raising awareness about this life-threatening disease.

Global health organizations estimate that between 2 to 3 million people are affected by malaria annually in Pakistan, with thousands of deaths reported each year, particularly when timely treatment is not provided.

Medical experts explain that malaria is transmitted through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Common symptoms include high fever, chills, sweating and body aches.

They further highlight that stagnant water and poor drainage systems contribute significantly to mosquito breeding, accelerating the spread of the disease.

Health authorities stress the urgent need for awareness campaigns similar to those conducted for dengue, along with effective preventive measures to control the spread of malaria and save precious human lives.
