MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Apr, 2026) Former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan has welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, terming it a “vital window of opportunity” for diplomacy to prevail over conflict. In a statement issued on Wednesday, he praised the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir for their proactive and persistent efforts in easing tensions and facilitating dialogue at a critical juncture.
He noted that Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach has played a pivotal role in sustaining engagement between Washington and Tehran, helping avert further escalation. Masood Khan emphasized that the country’s mediation underscores its emergence as a responsible global actor, capable of mobilizing regional and international support while maintaining balanced engagement with both sides. He added that the ceasefire extension offers much-needed space for structured negotiations, although the situation remains fragile amid ongoing strategic signaling.
Highlighting key regional dynamics, he pointed to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, noting that its stability is crucial for global energy markets and maritime security. He suggested that confidence-building measures, including ensuring freedom of navigation, could pave the way for meaningful dialogue. Despite continued accusations of violations, he maintained that a viable pathway toward negotiations still exists.
Masood Khan further stated that Pakistan stands ready to host and facilitate the next round of talks, with necessary arrangements already in place. Warning of far-reaching economic and geopolitical consequences in case of diplomatic failure, he stressed that any collapse of peace efforts would be a setback for the entire international community. He concluded with cautious optimism that sustained engagement and political will could transform the current truce into a lasting framework for peace.
