MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Apr, 2026) Mirpur in Azad Jammu and Kashmir is set to be connected to the world through the planned establishment of an international airport, according to Divisional Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan. He said preliminary work on the project was already underway and described it as a major step toward enhancing the region’s international profile, particularly for its large overseas Kashmiri population.
Speaking to a visiting delegation of the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) Lahore on Tuesday, the commissioner highlighted that the Rs. 10 billion Rathua Haryam Bridge over Mangla Dam reservoir would open new avenues for tourism and economic development. He noted that the project is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and promote commercial activity in the area.
Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan emphasized that Mirpur holds strategic importance as an industrial, commercial, and overseas hub of AJK. He said the region has already attracted investment in industrial zones at Mirpur and Bhimber, while efforts are ongoing to further improve infrastructure, business facilities, and services for overseas Pakistanis.
Reaffirming the government’s development vision, the commissioner said law and order across Azad Kashmir remains satisfactory and that initiatives such as overseas conventions and investment facilitation policies are helping drive growth. He added that Mirpur’s modern facilities, including hotels, sports infrastructure, and commercial centers, are turning it into a rising center of economic and tourism activity.
