ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Apr, 2026) Director, Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) Rawalpindi, Tahira Zafar Friday stressed awareness among healthcare providers, patients and the public about 'Hemophilia', a rare inherited bleeding disorder commonly affecting males but also present in females, saying lack of awareness results in late diagnosis and preventable complications, so timely diagnosis is essential.
While speaking exclusively with ptv news, Tahira Zafar, Director of the Hemophilia Treatment Center Rawalpindi, said that awareness about Hemophilia has improved in Pakistan, but gaps remain among the public and hospitals.
She noted that Hemophilia, traditionally a male disease is now being diagnosed in females but its signs are often hidden and appear late, delaying treatment.
She stressed that early recognition and timely diagnosis are vital, warning that missed or late symptoms can cause serious complications.
Zafar highlighted the need for stronger awareness campaigns, healthcare training, and public education to help identify symptoms sooner and ensure patients receive proper care.
Answering a query, she explained that Hemophilia is a rare inherited disorder where the blood lacks clotting proteins, preventing normal clot formation.
Severe internal bleeding can be life-threatening, but modern treatments, including gene therapy, can prevent or reduce bleeding episodes.
She added that warning signs include unexplained bleeding from cuts, injuries, surgery, or dental work, large bruises, unusual bleeding after vaccinations, joint pain or swelling, blood in urine or stool, frequent nosebleeds and irritability in infants. Serious complications can include brain bleeding, unstoppable bleeding from injuries and swollen, painful joints.
Responding to another query, Zafar said some people develop Hemophilia without a family history, known as Acquired Hemophilia. In this type, the immune system attacks clotting factor 8 or 9 and may be linked to pregnancy, autoimmune diseases, cancer, multiple sclerosis, or certain medications.
She concluded that the Hemophilia Treatment Center Rawalpindi continues to provide specialized care, counseling, and education, working closely with hospitals and communities to raise awareness, promote early detection and prevent complications.
