ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Jun, 2026) Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the Islamabad district administration has launched a city-wide preparedness campaign focusing on drain cleaning, encroachment removal and flood management measures.
Under the directions of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Memon, authorities have started preventive steps to improve water drainage and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
The campaign includes the cleaning of storm drains, streams and water channels across the city, while inspections of manholes and low-lying areas have also been ordered. The administration has directed field officers to complete assessments and ensure that all arrangements are in place before the onset of heavy rains.
According to the district administration, cleaning operations are currently underway in various parts of Islamabad to remove waste and obstructions from drains. Officials said the exercise aims to keep drainage routes clear and facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater during the monsoon season.
As part of the preventive measures, encroachments built around streams, drains and waterways are also being removed. The administration believes that clearing these areas will help reduce blockages and improve water movement during periods of heavy rainfall.
The DC has instructed all Assistant Commissioners to inspect low-lying areas in their respective jurisdictions and prepare detailed reports on locations that may be vulnerable to water accumulation.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Information regarding areas that were affected by monsoon-related issues last year has also been sought to support planning and response efforts.
Officials said that, besides sanitation work, the campaign will also focus on reviewing emergency preparedness measures. Relevant departments have been directed to inspect flood-fighting equipment and ensure that the required machinery and resources are available when needed.
The district administration will also examine the performance and readiness of the flood control system and early warning mechanisms. Authorities said the review is intended to strengthen coordination among departments and improve response times in case of heavy rainfall or flooding incidents.
Speaking about the initiative, DC Islamabad Irfan Memon said the purpose of the campaign is to ensure timely preparedness and make water drainage more effective during the monsoon season. He added that drain-cleaning activities will continue over the next several days until all identified locations are cleared.
The administration said the ongoing campaign is aimed at reducing risks, improving emergency readiness and ensuring that necessary arrangements are completed before the arrival of monsoon rains.
