LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Jun, 2026) Punjab Police on Friday made elaborate security arrangements across the province,including Lahore,for the peaceful observance of Ashura (10th Muharram-ul-Haram),deploying more than 90,000 police officers and personnel to guard mourning processions and Majalis.
According to Punjab Police spokesperson,Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem said that 2,732 mourning processions and 2,567 Majalis were being held across the province under a comprehensive security plan.
He said that in Lahore alone,45 mourning processions and 231 Majalis were being held with stringent security arrangements.
The IGP directed police officers to ensure foolproof security at all major gatherings through CCTV surveillance, walk-through gates,metal detector screening and thorough checking of participants.
He said lady police personnel had been deployed for the security and frisking of female mourners while plainclothes commandos were accompanying major processions.
Snipers had also been positioned on rooftops along procession routes to strengthen security.
IGP Abdul Kareem said comprehensive traffic management plans had been implemented across the province with alternative routes designated to facilitate commuters and maintain smooth traffic flow during processions and Majalis.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He said the Special Branch,Counter Terrorism Department (CTD),Traffic Police and other field formations were working in close coordination to ensure effective implementation of the Muharram security plan.
The IGP directed Regional Police Officers (RPOs),City Police Officers (CPOs),District Police Officers (DPOs) and other senior officers to remain in the field and personally supervise security arrangements,particularly in sensitive districts.
He expressed confidence that Punjab Police personnel would continue to discharge their duties with dedication, professionalism and a spirit of religious and national service to ensure the peaceful observance of Ashura.
The spokesperson said the IGP was personally monitoring security arrangements across the province on a round-the-clock basis and remained in constant contact with field commanders to review the overall law and order situation.
