PA body vows to safeguard provincial rights, seeks immediate payment of power dues

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Jul, 2026) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly's Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to protect the province's constitutional and financial rights, urging the federal government to immediately release outstanding electricity dues, including the Net Hydel Profit (NHP), owed to the province.

The meeting, chaired by PPP lawmaker Ahmad Kundi, was held here at the KP Assembly. Members received detailed briefings on pending Net Hydel Profit (NHP), electricity arrears, the functioning of the Council of Common Interests, the Chashma Right Bank Canal project, mobile network services, payments under the Benazir Income Support Programme, and matters relating to the preservation of the Gandhara civilization.

Addressing the meeting, Ahmad Kundi said all political parties in KP were united in protecting the province's constitutional and financial rights.

He stressed that there would be no compromise on provincial rights and called on the federal government to demonstrate seriousness in clearing the province's outstanding electricity dues.

He directed the provincial Finance Department to submit recommendations to the KP Assembly to help advance the province's constitutional claims and said all relevant institutions should fulfil their constitutional obligations.

The committee also expressed concern over the lack of regular meetings of the Council of Common Interests since 2014, with Ahmad Kundi stating that KP had suffered the most due to delays in resolving inter-provincial issues.

He asked Finance Secretary Musharraf Rasool to provide details of the amount the province had received under the AGN Qazi Formula for electricity-related payments.

The committee directed the Inter-Provincial Coordination Department to send a letter to KP CM Muhammad Sohail Afridi through the committee, requesting that he seek a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss provincial rights, particularly the issue of electricity arrears.

The committee also voiced concern over poor mobile phone services in several parts of the province.

Ahmad Kundi instructed officials of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and telecom operators to take immediate practical measures to improve network coverage and remain in close coordination with elected representatives.

During the meeting, MPA Ikramullah Ghazi highlighted weak mobile network coverage in his constituency. PTA Regional Deputy Director Tariq Khan assured the committee that connectivity issues in Tank, Dera Ismail Khan and other affected districts would be addressed at the earliest.

Ahmad Kundi also informed the committee that biometric verification issues affecting beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme had been resolved and payments had resumed across all districts.

He further announced that the provincial government would introduce a resolution in the KP Assembly for the protection and promotion of the Gandhara civilization.

The meeting was attended by MPAs Rehana Ismail, Naheeda Noor and Ehsanullah. Senior officials present included Secretary Energy and Power Nisar Khan, Director General Culture and Tourism Habib Arif, Secretary Law Javed Orakzai, Additional Secretary Inter-Provincial Coordination Naeem Durrani, the Additional Secretary of the KP Assembly, PTA officials and representatives of various mobile network operators.
