ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th May, 2026) Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division), Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari on Thursday said the government was working to increase the share of clean energy in Pakistan’s energy mix from the current 55 percent to 90 percent in the coming years.
He expressed these views during a meeting with German Ambassador Ina Lepel at the Power Division, where matters relating to ongoing reforms and development initiatives in the energy sector came under discussion, said a press release issued here.
The minister said Pakistan was generating a significant amount of electricity from indigenous energy resources which was strengthening energy self-reliance and sustainability. He also informed that around 800 megawatts of renewable energy was being planned through a competitive market mechanism. The government would not pursue new power purchases beyond already committed agreements. He added that Pakistan remained close to 70 percent self-sufficiency in the energy sector last year.
The minister also shared progress on the privatization of distribution companies. He said that three out of eleven DISCOs have been selected for initial privatization and more companies would be added in the next phase.
Leghari highlighted the importance of battery energy storage systems (BESS). He said these systems were essential for a modern and stable energy network.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He added that a BESS project for LESCO was under consideration with support from GIZ.
The minister also emphasized upon the need for investment in transmission infrastructure. He stated that the expansion and upgrade of the transmission network required significant funding. Pakistan business Council and other private stakeholders were being engaged in this effort.
He proposed the establishment of a Pakistan Germany Energy Cooperation Framework to further strengthen bilateral collaboration. He also stressed upon the importance of creating enabling conditions for German financial institutions to participate in investment and financing opportunities in Pakistan.
Ambassador Ina Lepel said that a climate cooperation framework already existed between the two countries which included the energy sector. She noted that both sides might explore ways to further enhance its effectiveness. She also mentioned an ongoing project worth around 300 million Euros which was currently under implementation.
She added that new projects were being prepared for 2027. The Ambassador reiterated interest in small hydropower, solar and sustainable energy projects and appreciated Pakistan’s reform direction. Both sides agreed to enhance technical level engagement in the energy sector. Both sides also agreed to continue close coordination and to meet again in the near future.
