GILGIT, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Apr, 2026) A dignified ceremony was held at the China Memorial in Danyor Gilgit to mark 75 years of enduring Pakistan-China friendship, organised by the Chinese Overseas Association Gilgit-Baltistan. The event drew a large number of participants from various walks of life.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Gilgit Range Naveed Khawaja attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Floral wreaths were laid at the memorial, while a smartly turned-out police contingent presented a guard of honour.
Speakers on the occasion described Pakistan-China relations as timeless, rooted in mutual trust, brotherhood and shared progress. Referring to the Karakoram Highway as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” they noted that its construction began in 1966 and was completed in 1978, symbolising the strength of bilateral ties.
They highlighted that during the construction of the highway, 110 Chinese engineers and workers sacrificed their lives. Of them, 88 are buried at the China Memorial site, while 22 remain missing due to various incidents. The ceremony is held annually to pay tribute to their sacrifices.
The event was attended by Chinese officials, representatives of police and civil administration, as well as students and members of the public. Gifts were also distributed among individuals responsible for the upkeep of the memorial by the Chinese Overseas Association Gilgit-Baltistan and the Chinese Embassy.
The ceremony concluded with participants raising slogans in favour of Pakistan-China friendship and reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.
