TAXILA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd May, 2026) Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi on Saturday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich Buddhist and Gandhara heritage while addressing the International Vesak Day 2026 ceremony held at Taxila Museum as chief guest.
The event, attended by diplomats, monks, scholars and visitors from several Buddhist countries including Thailand and Sri Lanka, highlighted Pakistan’s role as a custodian of one of the world’s most significant Buddhist legacies. Organized with the cooperation of the Government of Punjab and multiple foreign missions, the ceremony featured documentaries on Buddhist history, archaeological discoveries, and preservation efforts across the country.
Addressing the gathering, Khichi said Vesak marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha, reflecting universal values of peace, compassion and wisdom.
He emphasized the historical importance of Taxila and the Gandhara region, noting that Buddhism flourished there under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka, leading to the development of monasteries, stupas and the renowned Gandhara art tradition.
The minister said Pakistan remains committed to safeguarding this heritage through improved conservation, site management and promotion of cultural tourism. He also acknowledged the contributions of international partners and praised efforts by Maryam Nawaz and other officials for supporting preservation initiatives, as the event concluded with a renewed pledge to promote cultural diplomacy and interfaith harmony.
