Physicians share experiences, research at gut metabolic summit

HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Feb, 2026) The Pakistan Society of Physicians (PSP), Hyderabad Chapter, in collaboration with Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, organized the 'Gut Metabolic Summit' here on Monday.

The event brought together leading physicians, academicians, and healthcare professionals from Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah and other cities of Sindh.

The summit focused on the rapidly increasing burden of obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), cardiovascular diseases, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Pakistan.

The experts highlighted the critical role of the gut–metabolic axis, nutrition, inflammation, and lifestyle modification in contemporary clinical practice.

The Vice Chancellor of LUMHS Prof Dr Ikram Uddin Ujjan while addressing the summit said the importance of integrating emerging scientific evidence into routine clinical care was very essential.

He appreciated the collaborative efforts of PSP and LUMHS in promoting academic excellence, preventive healthcare strategies, and continuous professional development in Sindh.

Prof Ujjan remarked that a deeper understanding of gut health and its systemic impact provides new opportunities for early intervention and long-term disease prevention.

Prof Dr Santosh Kumar, Chapter Coordinator PSP Hyderabad, welcomed the distinguished guests and underscored the need for ongoing professional education to combat the growing epidemic of metabolic disorders.

Prof Dr Qaiser Jamal, Regional Vice President of the PSP, highlighted the urgency of addressing non-communicable diseases through multidisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based preventive strategies.

He underlined that improving gut health and promoting healthy lifestyle practices were essential for achieving sustainable healthcare outcomes in Pakistan.

Renowned speakers and panelists delivered insightful lectures and participated in an engaging panel discussion covering subjects like the gut microbiome and metabolic regulation; nutrition as a therapeutic tool in metabolic diseases; and chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic risk.

They also dwelt at length on probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary interventions and translating gut science into practical patient care.

The interactive panel discussion enabled participants to engage directly with experts, discuss real-world clinical challenges, and share regional experiences.

The summit witnessed enthusiastic participation from consultants, postgraduate trainees, and medical students, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care across Sindh.

The PSP reaffirmed its dedication to fostering academic collaboration, strengthening continuing medical education, and promoting preventive health strategies to build a healthier society.
