LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Apr, 2026) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the government has decided to reduce the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs. 80 per liter, as a result of which the price of petrol will decrease from Rs. 458.40 to Rs. 378 per liter from midnight between Friday and Saturday.
In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister said that new challenges are emerging for the common man. He stated that, with the grace of Almighty Allah and the prayers of the people, he has made every possible effort to utilize limited national resources to reduce public hardships and protect citizens from the storm of inflation through savings at every level.
He noted that global oil prices have surged significantly, and inflation has severely impacted even the strongest economies in the world, with Pakistan also being badly affected. He explained that over the past three weeks, he chose not to pass on the daily increase in fuel prices to the public, as he fully understands the struggles of an ordinary citizen who works hard throughout the day to earn a lawful livelihood for the family.
The Prime Minister said that during these three weeks, the government spent Rs. 129 billion from national resources to shield the public from the full impact of rising fuel prices. He expressed hope that ongoing global conflicts would end soon and peace would be restored, adding that Pakistan’s leadership, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has been making sincere efforts for peace.
He further said that after extensive consultations at the national level, including meetings with the President, provincial chief ministers, and other leaders, a comprehensive relief package was announced. He highlighted that, unlike some countries where long queues for fuel caused severe difficulties, Pakistan managed the situation effectively through timely decisions and collective efforts.
According to the announced measures, a subsidy of Rs. 100 per liter will be provided for motorcycles. Similarly, goods transport and public transport sectors will receive subsidies for one month, with small trucks getting Rs. 70,000, large trucks Rs. 80,000, and public transport buses Rs. 100,000 per month to prevent an increase in the prices of essential goods and fares.
The Prime Minister also announced Rs. 1,500 per acre assistance for small farmers. He added that fares for economy class passengers of Pakistan Railways will not be increased, and clear instructions have been issued to the Ministry of Railways in this regard.
He thanked all provincial chief ministers, including Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Murad Ali Shah, Suhail Afridi, and Mir Sarfraz Bugti, for their cooperation and commitment to this national cause. He emphasized that unity and collective effort are essential to overcome such challenges.
The Prime Minister assured that these measures will also apply to Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with the Federal government providing the necessary resources.
He acknowledged that while these steps will provide relief, the challenges faced by the public remain significant. He pledged that the government will continue working tirelessly until people can return to a stable and peaceful life.
Announcing further austerity measures, the Prime Minister said that the earlier decision of depositing two months’ salaries by cabinet members has now been extended to six months, as part of efforts to save national resources.
He concluded by expressing hope that, with Allah’s blessings, Pakistan will soon move towards prosperity, development, and poverty reduction. He reaffirmed that the government will take every necessary step to provide relief to the people during this difficult time.
