ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved public holidays on the occasion of Ashura (Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 A.H), one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic calendar.
Government offices across the country will remain closed during the two-day holiday as mourning processions and religious gatherings are held to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his family.
The Sindh government also announced public holidays for June 25 and 26, issuing a notification confirming the closure of offices across the province during the observance.
Muharram is a month of mourning. It marks the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, where Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), along with other family members and companions, was martyred, while some were also subjected to hardship and humiliation.
During this month, religious processions are held across the country.
Authorities are making special security arrangements nationwide to ensure the safety of mourners attending religious gatherings and processions during Muharram.
