PU,LGS clinch titles at 30th GCU Parliamentary Debates

Lahore Grammar School (LGS) and Punjab University (PU) claimed the top titles as orators from educational institutions across Pakistan debated contemporary conflicts,politics and economics at the 30th Government College University Parliamentary Debating Championship (GCUPD),here on Tuesday

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Apr, 2026) Lahore Grammar School (LGS) and Punjab University (PU) claimed the top titles as orators from educational institutions across Pakistan debated contemporary conflicts,politics and economics at the 30th Government College University Parliamentary Debating Championship (GCUPD),here on Tuesday.

The two-day national tournament hosted 61 teams from top educational institutions across Pakistan.

As hosts,the GCU Debating Society did not compete for the trophies.

In the English Open category,which featured 20 teams including LUMS, FCCU, and AIMC, LGS defeated the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in the final.

LGS won the debate on a complex geopolitical motion regarding a hypothetical nuclear non-proliferation agreement between Iran and the United States.

Bazaid Afzal was named Best Speaker.In the English Novice category,LGS B secured the Best Team title with Shayan Hadayar taking Best Speaker.

The Urdu Open category saw a larger turnout with 41 teams,including KEMU,UET and FJMU.

PU secured the championship title after winning the final debate,which focused on a critical examination of global power structures and imperialism.

PU's Filza Waqar was awarded Best Speaker.

The University of Management and Technology (UMT) won the Urdu Novice category, with Hassan Panjhoota named Best Speaker.

Addressing the concluding ceremony, GCU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry stated that the university remains committed to fostering academic discourse. He noted that GCU continues to sustain its century-old tradition of public speaking despite a broader national decline in such activities.

Prof. Chaudhry commended the GCU Debating Society and its advisor, Siddique Awan, for organizing the large-scale event and facilitating a platform for students to debate contemporary politics, economics, and socio-cultural dynamics.
