Punjab govt to build state-of-the-art cardiac institute in Gujranwala at Rs17bn cost: Kh Salman

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th May, 2026) Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique on Wednesday said that a state-of-the-art Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology was being built in Gujranwala at a cost of Rs17 billion to provide modern cardiac treatment facilities to the people of the region.

He was chairing a meeting held at the Specialized Healthcare and Medical education Department to review the establishment and administrative affairs of the Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology. During the meeting, representatives of the Infrastructure Development Authority Punjab (IDAP) gave a detailed briefing on the progress of the project, available resources and future goals.

Khawaja Salman Rafique said the Punjab government was committed to providing modern and quality cardiac healthcare facilities to millions of people in Gujranwala division. He said efforts were also underway to improve the Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology. The minister added that the new institution would prove to be a milestone in offering advanced and quality treatment for heart diseases, adding that bringing modern healthcare facilities to the doorsteps of the people remained the government’s top priority.

Punjab Health Advisor Major General (retd) Dr. Azhar Mahmood Kiani said the meeting reaffirmed the commitment to develop the Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology on modern lines. He said people of Gujranwala and surrounding areas would no longer have to travel to major cities for treatment of heart diseases.

Provincial Secretary Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Azmat Mahmood said the institution would be equipped with modern medical equipment, expert doctors and patient-friendly facilities. He added that the institute would become a practical example of public service in the healthcare sector.

Punjab Health Advisor Major General (retd) Dr. Azhar Mahmood Kiani, Chairman Punjab Chief Minister Advisory Committee on Cardiology Dr. Farqad Alamgir, Health Economist Dr. Muhammad Adnan Khan, Vice Chancellor University of Child Health Sciences Prof. Masood Sadiq, Prof. Haroon Hamid and COO IDAP Maira Ali attended the meeting through video link.

Special Secretary Development Ahmed Kamal Maan, Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Waseem, Additional Secretary Technical Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Waseem and other officers were also present in the meeting.
