LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd May, 2026) A modern and comprehensive Breast and Gynae-Oncology Institute is the need of the hour in view of the
continuous rise in cancer cases among women, said Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Principal
Professor Dr Muhammad Farooq Afzal.
He expressed these views while addressing the concluding session of “Gynaecon 2026,” organized by the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lahore General Hospital on Saturday. He emphasized that
such an institution would serve as a central hub for research, advanced diagnostics, effective treatment, and professional training, playing a crucial role in saving the lives of thousands of women.
Prof Farooq Afzal highlighted that timely diagnosis remains the most effective weapon against cancer, stressing the need to promote public awareness about early symptoms and preventive measures. He noted that the integration of modern research and technology has brought revolutionary advancements in the medical field, making the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases easier and more accessible than before.
He further stated that medical experts are now moving beyond traditional treatment approaches and adopting integrated strategies to combat serious female diseases, particularly breast and cervical cancers, in line with modern scientific principles.
The conference was attended by leading gynecologists, senior faculty members, and medical experts from across the country. Various sessions featured academic discussions on different types of cancer, modern diagnostic techniques, and emerging treatment trends, significantly enhancing the professional skills of participating doctors.
Prof. Farooq Afzal termed the conference a milestone for the promotion of women’s health and appreciated the efforts of the organizers, including Prof. Nudrat Sohail, Prof. Amna Ahsan Cheema, Prof. Amna Khanum, Dr. Saira Zeeshan, and the entire gynecology team.
At the conclusion of the event, certificates and commemorative shields were distributed among participants. Attendees described the conference as highly productive in terms of research and training and expressed hope that it would help formulate effective future strategies to combat women’s diseases, especially cancer.
