Rs4.1m fine imposed over profiteering, food adulteration

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd Apr, 2026) price control magistrates and teams of the Punjab Food Authority imposed fines exceeding Rs4.1 million during a province-wide crackdown against profiteering and sale of adulterated food on Thursday.

The action was initiated in response to public complaints, with the Ombudsman’s Office coordinating with relevant departments to ensure strict enforcement of laws.

According to the spokesperson, teams conducted extensive inspections across multiple districts, checking the prices and quality of essential food items, including chicken, fish, meat, milk, eggs, cooking oil, beverages and fried food.

During the inspections, numerous violations, including overcharging and sale of substandard food, were detected, leading to the imposition of heavy fines. Strict action was also taken against hotels and restaurants over poor hygiene conditions and provision of unsafe food.

The spokesperson said the objective of the crackdown was to ensure availability of safe and quality food at reasonable prices for the public. Citizens appreciated the initiative, expressing satisfaction over prompt action on their complaints, he added.
