SZABMU introduces PhD programs aligned with emerging global trends in specialized research

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Jun, 2026) Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) has introduced several Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in both medical and dental sciences to enhance not only the quality of academic scholarship but also contribute to evidence-based practice, policy development, and technological advancement in healthcare.

According to University source on Monday, these newly introduced programs included PhD in Surgery, Medicine, Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Dental Materials, Cardiology, and Pharmacology. This initiative represents a landmark achievement, as several of these programs are being offered as standalone PhD degrees for the first time in Pakistan.

It also stated that traditionally, doctoral education in these fields has been limited to broader disciplines such as basic medical sciences or general dentistry, with clinical specialties addressed through professional qualifications.

The introduction of new programs reflects SZABMU’s commitment to innovation in academic structure and alignment with evolving global trends in specialized research.

In another major development, the school of Dentistry, SZABMU has also achieved approval from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for all its clinical MDS programs, including Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, OMFS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons), Pediatric Dentistry, and Periodontology.

These programs and initiatives are expected to play a pivotal role in capacity building, fostering high-quality research output, and producing a new generation of clinician-scientists and healthcare educators equipped to address complex healthcare challenges.

Through this strategic development, SZABMU continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and the advancement of specialized knowledge in healthcare disciplines.
