PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Apr, 2026) World Autism Awareness Day was observed at the Paraplegic Center Peshawar (PCP).
Spokesman PCP on Thursday informed, the event was organized by the Center’s Occupational and Speech Therapy Departments to raise public awareness about the sensitive condition of autism.
On the occasion, experts highlighted the increasing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) among children and its adverse effects.
They emphasized that without timely diagnosis and proper guidance, the condition can severely affect a child’s growth and learning abilities; therefore, focused attention and evidence-based treatment are essential. Students from the College of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (CPMR) presented informative skits to promote awareness among society, particularly parents, regarding this critical issue.
Chief Guest and CEO Paraplegic Center Peshawar, Dr Syed Muhammad Ilyas in his address described autism as a complex disorder and expressed concern over its rising incidences.
He noted that lack of awareness among parents and society is further aggravating the problem.
He added that significant resources are being invested globally in research and effective treatment; however, timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, and proper management are crucial to control its spread.
Dr. Ilyas Syed also expressed concern that many parents, instead of seeking scientific treatment waste valuable time and resources on unproven practices such as visiting spiritual healers, relying on quack remedies and using amulets and rituals.
He stressed that such approaches not only delay proper care but may also worsen the child’s condition.
He urged parents to seek timely and qualified medical advice and ensure that children with autism receive proper care, training and rehabilitation so they can become active and dignified members of society.
Participants at the conclusion of the event, reaffirmed their commitment to promoting awareness, acceptance and positive attitudes towards autism, aiming to build a society where every child can grow and thrive according to their potential.
