World Press Freedom Day observed,calls for protection of journalists

SARGODHA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd May, 2026) World Press Freedom Day was observed on Sunday with journalists,academics and civil society representatives pledging to uphold free,responsible and independent journalism.

World Press Freedom Day was observed annually on May 3 to raise awareness about press freedom and remind states of their duty to respect and uphold freedom of expression.

The day was marked through discussions and informal gatherings,where participants underscored the importance of press freedom in strengthening democratic values,ensuring transparency and promoting accountability in society.

President Sargodha Press Club Sargodha Press Club,Abdul Hanan Chaudhry said a free press was essential for the development of a healthy society,adding that journalists must be allowed to perform their professional duties without fear or pressure.

He stressed that protection of journalists and freedom of expression were fundamental pillars of democracy.

Senior journalist Malik Shah Nawaz Jalip said that media professionals continue to face growing challenges in the line of duty but remain committed to informing the public with truth and accuracy.

He called for a safe and enabling environment for journalists to ensure independent reporting.

Assistant Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Sargodha Ammar Yasir highlighted the importance of responsible journalism in the digital age,noting that while media freedom was vital,verification and ethical standards were equally important.

He further said that academic institutions must equip future journalists with the skills to balance freedom with responsibility.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to journalistic integrity and stressed the need for collective efforts to protect media freedom and promote ethical reporting practices.
