PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Apr, 2026) Experts at the the University of Agriculture Peshawar (UAP) on Tuesday stressed the need for strengthening veterinary services, modern livestock management and research to ensure food security and public health during a ceremony held in connection with World Veterinary Day 2026.
The event was organized by the College of Veterinary Sciences under the theme “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health” to highlight the contribution of veterinary professionals in protecting animal health and supporting the livestock economy.
Secretary Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zarif-ul-Maani attended the ceremony as chief guest, while Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Sarzamin Khan presided over the event.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers said veterinarians play a crucial role in preventing animal diseases, improving livestock productivity and ensuring the supply of safe and healthy food to the public.
They noted that the livestock sector remained a major pillar of the national economy and required greater investment in modern technology, genetics, animal reproduction and extension services to meet future challenges.
The chief guest assured support for veterinary graduates through paid internship opportunities and said that cooperation between the livestock department and the university would be further strengthened through provision of scientific equipment, medicines, training programs and expert services.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Sarzamin Khan said the University is committed to promoting quality veterinary education and research, adding that steps were also being considered for the establishment of mobile veterinary clinics to improve outreach services.
Faculty members, researchers, students and professionals from the livestock sector attended the event and discussed key issues related to animal health, food safety and sustainable livestock development.
Awareness sessions and a quiz competition were also held to engage students and encourage practical understanding of veterinary sciences.
At the end of the ceremony, shields were distributed among distinguished guests in recognition of their services, while participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening veterinary services for a healthier society and improved food security.
