The EU leaders call for ceasefire to be enforced in Lebanon, stressing need to prevent further escalation in the region
BRISSELS: (Urdu point/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 9th, 2026) Several European countries, including United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, along with the European Commission and European Council, have welcomed the ceasefire between United States and Iran, urging all parties to ensure its full implementation.
In a joint statement, the leaders also called for the ceasefire to be enforced in Lebanon, stressing the need to prevent further escalation in the region. They expressed gratitude to Pakistan and other partners for their role in facilitating diplomatic efforts.
The statement emphasised that negotiations should aim at achieving a swift and lasting end to the conflict, which can only be secured through diplomatic channels. It further encouraged immediate progress towards a meaningful agreement, highlighting its importance for the protection of Iranian civilians and regional security.
Leaders noted that a sustained ceasefire could help avert a severe global energy crisis and affirmed their continued support for diplomatic engagement, maintaining close coordination with the United States and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, addressing parliament, said restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz remains a vital interest for Italy and the European Union. She strongly condemned any violations of the ceasefire in the middle East, warning that the region has reached a critical juncture.
Meloni added that while a fragile opportunity for peace exists, it must be pursued with seriousness.
She cautioned that if tensions escalate again, Europe may need to consider temporarily suspending its stability and growth framework to respond to the crisis.
