A healthy environment is the foundation of a strong economy. Natural capital—clean air, reliable water, and stable climates—powers core sectors like agriculture and energy.

World Environment Day (WED) is being celebrated here and all over the world, with the aim of raising awareness among people about the protection of the environment, the importance of natural resources and the dangers of climate change.

The day is celebrated annually on 5 June to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, government entities, and represents the Primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

The day is one of the biggest annual events organised by the United Nations (UN) to generate awareness about the significance of nature and greenery. The United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972, which was the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment.

Likewise, Earth Day is also observed all over the world on April 22 each year to celebrate gains and create new visions to accelerate environmental or climate progress.

According to experts, increasing environmental pollution, deforestation, continuous increase in temperature and climate change are creating serious threats to human life and natural systems. World Environment Day is celebrated every year with the resolve to make the earth safe, clean and green for future generations.

This year, the theme of World Environment Day is 'Inspired by Nature For Climate', which reminds us of the fact that natural systems and environmental resources play a key role in dealing with the climate crisis.

Noted environmentalist Imran Sabir said that planting trees, careful use of water, reducing the use of plastic and adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle have become the need of the hour. According to him, only individual and collective actions can ensure environmental protection.

He warned that if effective measures are not taken today, the effects of climate change may intensify in the future.

He said that World Environment Day gives an important message to conserve natural resources and promote environmentally friendly behaviors.

Imran Sabir emphasized the development of Earth's native ecosystems to actively extract carbon from the atmosphere.

It may be mentioned here that in Pakistan, local communities, government ministries (such as the Environment Protection Department), and universities regularly mark the day with tree-planting drives, environmental walks, and cleanup campaigns.

Environmental expert Dr Amir Alamgir said that protecting nature is not the responsibility of just one day but a shared responsibility of all of us. Only a clean, green, and safe environment can guarantee a better and sustainable future for future generations.

Dr Amir Alamgir said that trees are the guarantor of our life, adding that more and more trees should be planted to reduce the air density, if every Pakistani plants at least one plant to increase the number of trees, then we can become a green Pakistan.

He said that today we all have to take a pledge to actively participate in the national duty of planting trees to keep our land green.

Noted environmentalist Dr. Mahmood Khalid Qamar said that he said lets protect our planet through conserving its resources, embracing sustainable ways of living and raising awareness of our collective duty in this regard.

He said Pakistan contributes minimally to global emissions but it ranks 5th among the nations’ most vulnerable to climate-induced disasters.

To a query Qamar said that National Clean Air Policy, Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations, and National Adaptation Plan are some of the government's significant initiatives to restore ecosystems, expand clean energy, and empower communities.

He emphasized that planting trees is a vital and highly effective nature-based method to combat climate change. Trees act as the Earth's lungs, absorbing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide while providing clean oxygen.

Furthermore, trees cool local temperatures, prevent soil erosion, and support wildlife habitats, he said.
