MULTAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Apr, 2026) Nishtar Hospital launched laparoscopic or minimal invasive surgery services in its Accidents & Emergemcy ((A&E) ward, marking a significant step forward in modernizing emergency healthcare services in the region here on Thursday.
The new facility was inaugurated on Thursday by Nishtar Medical University,(NMU) VC Dr Mehnaz Khakwani, MS, Dr Amjad Rao, Dean of Surgery, Dr Masood Haraj, Associate Prof, Dr Tania and others.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Mehnaz Khakwani described the move as part of a global shift toward minimally invasive surgical procedures.
She stated that laparoscopy — often referred to as “keyhole surgery” — is a low-risk surgical technique widely used in modern medicine for diagnosis and treatment of various conditions.
The VC added that the procedure allows surgeons to examine and treat internal organs through small incisions, reducing pain and recovery time for patients.
Previously, laparoscopic services at Nishtar Hospital were available only to admitted inpatients.
She stated the introduction of the technology in the emergency ward will help doctors diagnose urgent medical conditions more quickly while also improving treatment standards.
Among others, Registrar, Dr Syed Ahmer Hassan, Director Emergency, Dr Zahid Ahmed, Dr Khalid Chishti, Dr Zahra Nazish, Dr Hajra Masood, Dr Sayeda Ali, Dr Naveed Dr Zulqarnain Niazi, and Dr Imran Mazari were present.
Nishtar MS, Dr Rao Ajmad explained that patients would be benefitted by introduction of the leproscopic surgery at A&E ward which will help reduction of their stay from six or seven days to a couple of days at the hospital.
He noted that key advantages of laparoscopy over traditional open surgery include less pain, faster healing, shorter hospital stays and smaller scars.
He stated the trainee docotors would also get a opportunity for hand on training about it.
President Pakistan Medical Association(PMA) and Dean of Surgery and Allied Services at NMU, Dr. Masood-ul-Rauf Haraj, said the project was made possible through donor support and hospital funding.
He maintained that the new service would make emergency treatment easier for both patients and doctors.
He informed that it would help easier diagonistic for medics.
It merits mentioning here that laparoscopic services are now standard in many advanced healthcare institutions worldwide, and their introduction at Nishtar Hospital is expected to significantly improve emergency care and medical training.
Laproscopic or minimally invasive surgery, is a modern technique used to examine and treat organs in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions using a camera-equipped fiber optic cable (laparoscope).
